With a title like Dumb and Dumber To there is only a certain amount one can expect to receive from watching this sequel and for fans of the original 1990’s hit comedy, expectations must be tempered with knowledge that the immature escapades that Harry and Lloyd find themselves involved in just aren’t what they use to be.

The good news in regards to this film that should’ve been made years ago is it’s actually a lot more enjoyable than it has a right to be and when compared to many recent modern comedies, actually has a much higher hit ratio than many of its counterparts even though it’s so called “story” is at times a trudge through the doldrums.

What makes Dumb and Dumber To work is without doubt the commitment of its two defiantly two old for this leads Jeff Daniels and the now rarely sighted Jim Carey. While it’s possible that they succeed in reliving the roles that made them one of cinemas most famous duos purely on the back of goodwill, there are simple and worryingly entertaining moments mined from these two seasoned professionals. Whether riding a bike in tandem, playing suspect car trip games or hitting the open highway on an ice rink vehicle, having these creations back brings a smile to your face even when the film looks set to nose dive off a cliff.

Where Dumb and Dumber To finds the going tough is in it’s at times harsh and offensive tone and where the first film found light of most situations there are scenarios here that just aren’t actually all that funny and jokes fall straight to the ground because of it. Blame for this must surely be pointed at the Farrelly Brothers who over recent years have badly lost their way behind camera and when a movie has 7 plus writers working on it, you must know for sure that not everything was going to go smoothly.

It’s been a long time between drinks for everyone involved here and in the years that have passed between the original and this latest slapstick adventure the comedy that made Harry and Lloyds adventure so memorable in the first place has well and truly passed us by. In saying this, Dumb and Dumber To, as mentioned, is a lot more enjoyable than you’d expect and in the dry comedy spell that we’re in at the moment, any laughs are good laughs, no matter how basic the material.

  1. As much as I loved the first one, I found this one pretty painful to sit through. I’m all about revisiting the classics, but this one should have been left as is. I came extremely close to walking out of the theater, so I would advise others to avoid it like the plague and enjoy your memories of a great cult classic.
